Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Arthur George Rice of Ottawa began military service on 25 November 1915 at the age of 24 at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, joining the 77th Overseas Battalion. He was described as being 5' 8" with a light complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He had the following distinguishing marks: an appendectomy scar, a left herniotomy scar and a tattoo on his left forearm reading "A.G. Ryce". On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his mother, Mrs. Isaac Henry Rice of Ottawa. He was assigned regimental number 145687.1 Arthur George Rice was killed in action on 8 August 1918 at France. Lance Corporal, Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) 13th Battalion, Service No: 145687
     "Previously reported Missing, believed Wounded, now Killed in Action"
     He was attached to the 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Tank Brigade as observer durng the attack South West of HANGARD WOOD. Shortly after the commencement of the attack the tank in which he was riding was seen to be in flames, and later his body, badly burned, was found and buried.
     His body was found and buried, but the location is unknown. He is remembered on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial

     (photo - see above) LANCE CORPORAL A. G. RICE
     who was employed with the DominIon Express Company and the G. T. P., in Saskatoon during 1912-13, has been killed in action. Death came on his twenty-seventh birthday, August 8. Word to this effect has been received by his brother, W. J. Rice, 322 Avenue J. South, Saskatoon. Another, brother, Kall Rice lives at Floral. His mother, Mrs. I. H. Rice, resides in Ottawa, from where Corporal Rice enlisted with a Scottish unit. He had spent two years in the trenches in France.13

     In the obituary of Isaac Henry Rice who died 6 June 1917, his son, Carl Rice of Saskatoon, SK, was listed as a survivor.5
     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Ottawa Citizen published in Ottawa, Ontario 16 March 1942:
Karl Rice
     Word has been received here of the death of Karl Rice, native of Ottawa and former Canadian National Railway conductor. at Archerwill, Sask. He was in his 55th year.
     A graduate of Lisgar Collegiate, Mr. Rice left for the when he was 20 years old, becoming employed with the C.N.R. He worked on trains travelling of Saskatoon and retired several years ago to live on a farm at Archerwill.
     Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Private Kenneth with an artillery unit overseas, and Private Orval, stationed at Camp Borden; three daughters, one of whom, Miss Hazel Rice, has been residing in Ottawa; four brothers, Walter of Askwith, Sask., Gordon, Ray and Kenneth, all of Ottawa: and four sisters, Mrs. T. C. Clark, Mrs. Roy Woods, Mrs. Fred Stoate Ottawa, and Mrs. Frank Powse of Detroit.
     Burial will take place in Archerwill on Tuesday.4

     The following death notice appeared in the Ottawa, Ontario The Ottawa Journal 16 March 1942 :
RICE
     At Archerwill, Sask., on Sunday, March 15, 1942, Karl Rice, eldest son of Mrs. Rice and the late I. H. Rice, of Ottawa, in his 55th year. Funeral service and interment at Archerwill, Sask., on Tuesday, 17th instant.3

     In the obituary of Walter James Rice who died 12 September 1973, his brother, Karl Rice, was listed as predeceased.6
