Elijah was apparently orphaned at an early age and apprenticed to a Mr. Hecox.1 Elijah Josephus Simmons and Mia [Miah? Meah?] F. Simmons lived in Antioch, Lake County, Illinois.

Elijah Josephus Simmons died on 22 December 1850 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, at age 47.4 He was a house carpenter, owning real property valued at $1,500 in 1850.5 Elijah Josephus Simmons was born in New York, "orphaned at an early age and apprenticed to a Mr. Heacox. He was an A-1 Carpenter, millwright and cabinet maker. He crossed the plains with the great throng, died and is buried we know not where." These words were written by his son, Frank Morton Simmons of Antioch, Illinois. Elijah died of brain fever and dysentery. He is buried in Tier 13 with the other miners whose families could not be located and is now under the 4 lane highway, per the Sacramento City Cemetery records.6

Biography

Chauncey R. Bailey was born on 2 September 1820 in Onondaga County, New York.2,3,4

Chauncey R. Bailey married Martha P. Botsford, daughter of Elnathan Botsford, Jr., and Sophia Shepard.1

Chauncey R. Bailey married Jemima/Jamina Abbott circa 1867.5,3 He died on 6 April 1908 at age 87. He is listed in the 1900 census, but his wife Jemima is listed as a widow in the 1910 census.6,4


Chauncey R. Bailey and Martha P. Bailey appeared on the census of 1850 in Clay, Onondaga County, New York.7 He was a farmer in 1850.7

Chauncey R. Bailey and Martha P. Botsford appeared on the census of 1860 in Clay, Onondaga County, New York, which lists Chauncey Bailey, 39; his wife Martha, 35; and their children Josephone, 14, Bingham, 11, Chauncy [Jr.]. 9, and Nettie, 6, all born in New York.2 He was a farmer in 1860.2

His wife, Martha, died in 1866 in Clay, Onondaga County, New York, at age ~41, leaving him a widower. She is listed in the 1860 census, but in the 1870 census her husband Chauncey has a new wife Jemima, who he married in about 1867 (per 1990 census), so Martha either died or they divorced before then.3

Bailey, 49; his new wife Jemima Bailey, 36; and Chauncey's children by his first wife Martha, Bingham N., 20, Chauncey H., 19, and Nettie, 15, all born in New York.5 He was a farmer in 1870.5

Chauncey R. Bailey and Jemima/Jamina Bailey appeared on the census of 1880 in Clay, Onondaga County, New York, which lists Chauncey R. Bailey, 59; his wife Jemimah [sic], 46; Chauncy's children by his first wife Martha, Chauncey H., 29, and Netie, 24, all born in New York; and James E. Berry. 18, a farm laborer.8 He was a farmer in 1880.8

Chauncey R. Bailey and Jemima/Jamina Bailey appeared on the census of 1900 in Clay, Onondaga County, New York.3 He was a landlord in 1900.3
