He was in the Revolutionary War. When the war came, Richard enlisted in the Continental Army and was made a Captain of a company in Col. John Seward's Sussex County, New Jersey, regiment. He was in the battles of Monmouth, Brandywine and several others. After the war he took up land surveying, following in the footsteps of his grandfather . He m2 Phoebe Amelia Seward, a niece of Col. Seward.5,2,6

His wife, Phoebe, died before 1780, leaving him a widower.
