JWH gives this John Houghton as son of Israel Houghton and Martha Wheelock in a list of 17 children, and as married to Mary Allen. The first 3 children listed were not Israel's. Israel's son Capt. John Houghton was born in Lancaster MA, lived and died in Keene, NH

Research

Problem: Capt. John who married Mary Allen; only given in JWH. Note that there are almost no place names for this family, given by JWH. Israel's son Capt. John Houghton (Houghton-3784) is married to Relief Sawyer and ended up in Keene, NH. The parents of the above John Houghton are unknown.
Some additional discrepancies in this list of children:
The information provided for the last four children Lucy, Sally, Joel, and Ezra, matches closely with children of Benjamin Houghton (1771-1819) and Dinah (Houghton) Houghton (1727-abt.1793).
Children Sampson, Henry, and Richard were settlers in New York. Census and other records list their births most frequently as Connecticut (sometimes Rhode Island, or New York). They more often used the spelling Haughton.

Descendant Bryant Haughton believes that a large Haughton family originates from this line, particularly for Sampson, Henry, and Richard.

M. Cole: The Houghton Genealogy, provides a different narrative for Captain John Houghton, but this conflicts with the records in Lancaster, MA and Keene, NH. It's clear from the land records that John Houghton of Keene, was the son of Israel Houghton. (Israel deeded land in Keene to him as his son in 1769), and the probate record names Relief as his widow. The birth records for Keene show births for John and Relief from 1774 to 1796.
