EmailJun 15, 2016Sarah: I'm trying to get one of my male relatives to test on the Y-chromosome - although our line there should ultimately go back through the Lawton/Laughton line to England. In fact, people on that family tree probably knew the Houghtons in Lancaster, Massachusetts, as the Laughtons lived there, and I think my ancestor Thomas Wilder even married a Houghton - though my family (Laughton, Ballard, Wilder) was descended, I think, from his first wife, Mary Wheeler Wilder, not from Mary Houghton Wilder. The Laughtons, however, stayed in the area and settled in the Atho Massachusetts area, where my father was raised. But you are right that my known Houghton connection is through my maternal line--my maternal great-grandmother was born a Houghton. Anyway, I suppose I joined simply to hear news of the Houghtons. I have some of the stories and research done by my great-great-aunt Edna Houghton, and find the family's story interesting. Please let me know if you think I should drop out since I obviously won't be adding anything to the Y-chromosome story.

NoteStanley was very ill for 6 months before he was sent to Colorado for an additional year and a half where he was treated for Tuburculosis. He was in one of the TB sanitariums located south of Denver in and around Colorado Springs, probably in Manitou Springs.

On 18 October, his condition became acute. On 22 October, his doctor moved Stanley from Manitou Springs to St. Luke's hospital in Denver where he was admitted. Stanley died less than a week later on 28 October. He was only 29 years old when he died. Stanley was shipped home by train in care of a Sardinia, New York undertaker.

Unfortunately, Stanley left a wife, Charlotte, with two young daughters, Doris and Ruth.

This is a very sad end for a very young man. He most likely contracted TB by being exposed to someone while on one of his frequent salesman trips.

It is evident that he was well loved by the grave marker provided by his Colorado friends.

Born Jan. 1, 1781.
Died Apr. 20, 1866.
AE. 85 Y'rs & 3 M's. & 20 D's.
BiographyDorretta's common names were Dolly and Dorothy.

Dorretta married Perter Houghton, circa 1805, likely in Connecticut. Peter was born 1760-1770; his birth location and parentage is unknown to this writer.

Dorretta and Peter arrived in the Cazenovia area, circa 1814. Peter first appears on the Cazenovia Village tax rolls in 1814 and last appears in 1821.

Peter is enumerated in the 1830 census of Cazenovia. In his household is a male child aged 5-10 years, a female child aged 0-5 years, and an elderly male aged 70-80 years. It is not known if the children are Dolly's.

Peter Houghton apparently died sometime before September 1849 before Dolly's marriage to Daniel Goodspeed, on 02 Sep 1849. For both parties it was their 2nd marriage.

It is not known how Dolly and Daniel's marriage ended but in the 1855 census of Cazenovia, Dolly is enumerated in the household of her brother-in-law, Oramel Shapley. Her name is 'Dolly Houghton' and she has been a local resident for 41 years.

By the time of the 1860 census of Charlotte, Chautauqua Co., New York, Dorothy is enumerated in the household of her brother-in-law, Dudley Nichols.

Dorretta died aged 85 years.
