Biography

At hydrotherapy'ss height in the 1850s there were over 200 water-cure establishments in the United States, most located in the northeast. Few of these lasted into the postbellum years, although some survived into the 20th century including institutions in Scott (Cortland County), Elmira, Clifton Springs and Dansville. While none were located in Jefferson County, the Oswego Water Cure operated in the city of Oswego.
In America, one of the leaders of the new movement was Joel Shew, frequently referred to as the American Priessnitz. Shew, a native of Saratoga, had worked in a daguerreotype shop and developed health problems due to the toxic chemicals used in the process. He became interested in medicine, went to medical school and graduated with an M.D. sometime before 1843. Shortly after graduation he became involved with hydropathy and in 1843 he and his wife, Marie Louise Shew, began to take in patients at their home in New York City, thus opening the
country’s first water cure. Until his early death in 1855, the Shews also operated water cure establishments in New Lebanon Springs and Oyster Bay. Both Shews became prolific writers. Joel wrote the Hand-Book of Hydrotherapy and edited the Water Cure Journal, which by the 1850s boasted of a subscription list of 100,000.
New Lebanon Springs Water-Cure: In the spring of 1845 Dr. Shew opened his second water-cure at New Lebanon Springs near Albany. The building cost the new owner more than $3000 and he had to lay two aqueducts to a mountain stream nearly a mile away. In 1847 Shew opened a third water-cure in Oyster Bay on Long Island.
