Haplogroup R-M269; Kit 903118; match R-S424 Modal (Scottish). Not only that, you have a perfect match to the parameters for our Modal & you are our first "Houghton" surname

Research

James is an R-M173; Robert is an R-M269; both are documented descendants of John Houghton of NJ; R-M173 usually turns out to be R-M269, so perhaps they are in the same R1b major haplogroup. Therefore, perhaps they are from the same documented line. But at only YDNA 12 allelles, I would not hazard a guess.

CJV: Unfortunately we have only 2 volunteers on the Houghton DNA group who have documentary evidence of descendancy from John Houghton of Stony Brook, New Jersey. James Lowell Houghton, who has passed away, had solid evidence for this descendancy and has a DNA haplogroup of R-M173; Robert turns out to be haplogroup R-M269. Neither James or Robert's DNA matches any other Houghton DNA volunteer's DNA out of 81 volunteers. I originally was hoping Robert would prove the lineage of John Houghton of NJ, but this turns out not to be the case. When I looked at Robert's DNA matches at FTDNA (and there are hundreds of listed persons) there was not a single match that was a Houghton. His closest DNA matches are to males with surnames of Walker and MacCordle, both of which have a genetic distance of 2 out of 67, which means they are very related. So we have a real genetic mystery. We cannot currently conclude either James or Robert are descendant's of John Houghton, without getting more volunteers.
