John Houghton is Associate Professor of Sociology in New College at St. Edward’s University, Austin, Texas. Dr. Houghton received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas and has research and teaching interests in political economy, urban sociology and social change. He has taught at the University of Texas, Temple University and St. Edward’s, where he has been since 1982. At St. Edward’s he has taught sociology as a member of the New College faculty, been Associate Dean and Dean of New College, directed the university’s strategic self-study, and served as Vice President of the College of Professional and Graduate Studies. As vice president, John supported the growth and development of St. Edward’s graduate programs, the New College undergraduate program for working adults, and continuing professional education. After more than a decade of administrative service, Dr. Houghton returned to the faculty in 2005.

Dr. Houghton has researched, lectured and published in the areas of urban political economy and planning, economic development, social evolution, social theory, and adult and higher education. He has served the Austin community in a variety of capacities: steering committee member and economic development task-group chairman for AustinPlan; executive committee, Town Lake Park Alliance; founding member, Austin Economic Development Commission; member and information systems committee chair of the Austin/Travis County AMEGO committee on metropolitan government; board member of the Austin Telecommunity Network Project; planning committee member for the Greater Austin@Work Alliance; member and vice chairperson, Education/Careers Partnership; and board, committee chairperson, and executive committee member of the Greater Austin WorkSource Board.
