I spoke to Betty the relative of Charlotte today about the connection to the Donner Party. She owns a book by CF McGlasan called The History of the Donner Party. Inside Charlotte wrote something like George Washington Houghton was a descendant of the Donner Party. I have learned that the cemetery where Charlotte is buried contains a grave of George W Houghton b. 1852 and died 1892. The cemetery is Savannah Cemetery. I have tried to find a connection and can't but Betty who is in possession of the book by McGlasan says George W. Houghton's name is in Charlotte's Bible which she has also. Betty and I think that Charlotte's mother Mary Ellen who later married Charles A. Lynch was first married to George W. Houghton and that she married Lynch after 1892 when her husband died. By that time Mary Ellen had two daughters, Charlotte born 1884 and Eva M Houghton born 1887. She had another daughter with Charles Lynch named Mabel in 1894 so she must have married Lynch right after George Houghton died. George Washington Houghton must have been connected to Eliza P. Donner's husband Sherman Otis Houghton somehow. He is the right age to be his father but I don't think he was. [CJV: not his son] Sherman had been married first to Mary Donner daughter of Jacob Donner and George Washington Houghton was born while walking across the plains in 1852. That is all I know right now.

I've done a little more checking on the internet and I am pretty well convinced that Charlotte Houghton was the daughter of George W. Houghton, son of Samuel born in Kansas whom you have on your web site. It is clear from Charlotte's responses as to where father was born on censuses that she doesn't really know what state as she says Oregon, Wyoming. One clue I noticed was that in the census of 1920 she puts down that her father was born US Plains and then crossed out plains. She was born in 1884 and George W died in 1892 so she was only about 8 at the time. I think her mother married Charles Lynch about a year after George W died because they had a daughter named Mabel Lynch in 1894 so her mother may not have talked much about George after that except to say he was born while mother was crossing the plains which is what she wrote in the books Betty has now. Thus Charlotte likely had an impression from her mother that George was born while mother was crossing the plains (Kansas) and that he was related to the Donner Party. You said that Samuel lived in Kansas at one time so that could be a connection to George being born on the plains.¹
