Susan Owens: He was not a minister. In his early years in Batchellerville he was a storekeeper, the village's first postmaster, and a teacher. After the family moved to Albany in the spring of 1854 he worked for the state banking department and later was a clerk in the comptroller's office. However, Joseph's father Samuel and his second wife, Azubah Slocum,had a son Samuel, known as the Rev. Sam Snow, who was a minister--Methodist, I believe--and is reported to have performed hundreds of marriage ceremonies over the course of his career.
