Friends called Carl Eugene Houghton a small man, but he spent his time on earth often living much larger than life.

The Penn Valley man was much more than just a husband, father and friend who dabbled in dozens of businesses and passions.

He was, as his daughter Marlys Houghton of Penn Valley described her father, who died Nov. 25, a man with the golden touch.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Grass Valley, with a celebration of life following at Mr. Houghton's Lake Wildwood residence. He was 79.

A Navy torpedo man who enlisted just after the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941, Mr. Houghton was an outdoorsman, gas station owner, developer, contractor, moving company maven and a real-estate broker.

He held so many jobs - and was so successful in them - he could have sparked jealousy in legendary con man Frank Abagnale Jr., whose life was featured in the 2002 movie "Catch Me If You Can."

Mr. Houghton is listed in the "Hunting Book of World Records" for bagging the largest caribou, and his golfing skill was such that, when he moved to Lake Wildwood 19 years ago, he took up residence at the gated community's first tee.

"He just wanted to be successful," said Marlys Houghton.

And Mr. Houghton lived up to that reputation. Properties he purchased in Vacaville and Paradise are now lucrative shopping centers. A dozen Lake Wildwood properties he bought were turned into large homes. Years ago, he purchased a 1,000-acre swath of Penn Valley land on Highway 20 that he later developed into a series of ranch homes.

Mr. Houghton was successful enough to keep 100 acres for himself, where he raised Black Angus steer on a ranch, his daughter said.

When he wasn't wheeling or dealing, Mr. Houghton was off in the West or overseas, hunting elk or other big game, his daughter added, noting that her father would often bring the beasts home, stuffed and ready for mounting.

"He didn't like to lose at anything," said Dave Leslie, who helped build Mr. Houghton's Lake Wildwood homes.

"He had the money, and I had the muscle," Leslie said.

Of his friend's competitive nature on the hunting trail, "He was always looking to bag a bigger one," Leslie said. "He was always trying to outdo you, but he'd do it in a quiet way."

Mr. Houghton took many of his trips on a wing, flying his Cessna to Pebble Beach or Montana on golfing or hunting excursions.

Mr. Houghton's only weakness, it seemed, was his wife Noni, who in 59 years of marriage rarely flew with him on those trips.

Mr. Houghton was a man who rarely sat still.

"No, never," Marlys Houghton said. "Building homes was his retirement."

Perhaps it was her father's lack of height that made him try harder, she said.

"He was a little guy, but mighty. He was always shorter and smaller than everybody, even my mother," Marlys Houghton joked.

Carl Eugene Houghton was born April 29, 1924 in Vacaville, to Walter and Agnes Houghton-Dean. He attended high school in Sacramento before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1941. He married his wife, Leona Ellen, in 1945 in Vallejo. He was also an avid yachtsman.

He is survived by two daughters, Marlys Houghton of Penn Valley and Karyn Erickson of Placerville; a son, James, of Penn Valley; a brother, Richard, of Fairfield; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Houghton-Dean, sister, Lourraine Greening and his wife, Leona Houghton, who died earlier this year.

Private graveside services for Leona Ellen Houghton of Lake Wildwood will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Mrs. Houghton died Thursday, June 12, in Grass Valley. She was 77.

She was born June 18, 1925, in Ruth, Nev., to James and Bea Kelso. She graduated from Salem High School in Oregon. She married Carl Houghton. She was a secretary for the Fairfield High School. She was a member of the Niners Golf Club, Pocahontas, Revelers, and the Exchange Club. She enjoyed golf, reading, world traveling, ceramics, crossword puzzles, fishing and dancing.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carl Houghton of Grass Valley; daughters Kayrn Erickson of Placerville and Marlys Houghton of Penn Valley; son, James Houghton of Penn Valley; brother, Billy Kelso of Valencia; granddaughters, Kara Smith of Lake Charles, La. and Shelly Shelby Erickson of Placerville; grandson, Aron Houghton of Cameron Park; great-grandsons Christopher Carter of Placerville and Joshua Smith of Lake Charles, La; great-granddaughter, Cassandra Barwis of Placerville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bea Kelso, in 1996; and father, James William Kelso, in 1946.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.

Graveside services for James William Houghton of Penn Valley will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley. A reception will follow at the home of Marlys Houghton.

Mr. Houghton died Tuesday, April 26, at home. He was 56.

He was born Dec. 23, 1948, in Vallejo, to Carl and Leona (Kelso) Houghton. He was raised in Fairfield, and graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in education. He owned Houghton Construction Company in Penn Valley for 25 years. He enjoyed softball and was a past member of the Penn Valley Lions Club.

He is survived by his sisters Marlys Houghton of Lake Wildwood, and Karyn Erickson of Coloma; nephew, Aron Houghton; and nieces Kara and Shellie Erickson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Leona Houghton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Richard “Dick” Houghton

Richard passed away at his home surrounded by those he loved. A longtime resident and business owner of Fairfield, Dick was known for his dedication to business. Dick was born and raised in California. He honorably served his country during WWII as a B29 Bomber. After the war, Dick opened a business in the produce and trucking industry which he ran well into his 80’s. He will be remembered by his family and friends. A Titan of his industry everything he touched turned to gold. It is an honor and privilege to have known him. He will be always loved and never forgotten by all those whose life he touched.

Nancy Kathleen Houghton

Graveside interment services will be held for Nancy Kathleen Houghton, 63, of Cortez, on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Summit Ridge Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Houghton passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo., on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000. She was born in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 18, 1936, the daughter of Daniel F. Herron and Bertha M. (Lewis) Herron. Nancy had worked as a pharmacist in this area for many years. She also held membership in the Ute Mountain Gem and Mineral Society.
Surviving Nancy are two stepsons and their wives, John and Donna Houghton, of Oregon, and Scott and Frances Houghton, of Colorado; her stepmother, Helen Herron, of Missouri; and five grandchildren, John Houghton Jr., Trevor Houghton, Jacob Houghton, Annie Houghton, and Scott Houghton Jr. Nancy's husband, George Robert Houghton, preceded her in death in 1993.

St. Joseph, MO, USA, May 29, 2019 Maurice E. Houghton 1924-2019 KINGSTON, Mo. — Maurice E. Houghton, 94, Kingston, passed away on May 27, 2019, at the Hill- crest Manor Nursing Home, Hamilton. He was a life-long Cald- well County, Missouri, res- ident. Maurice was born on Dec. 31, 1924, in Kingston, at home to Albert and Lin- nie (Stone) Houghton. He was a 1942 graduate of the Kingston High School. Maurice was a farmer and served as the Presid- ing Judge (Presiding Com- missioner) of Caldwell County for 23 years serv- ing from 1963-1986. He served in the past as the President of the Kingston School Board, and was a Charter Mem- ber of the Kingston Nazarene Church which was established in 1956. On Jan. 24, 1946, he mar- ried Ruth Evelyn Hill in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death in 2004. He was also preceded by: his parents; son, Rodney Houghton; four sisters- Kathryn, Elizabeth, Vir- ginia and Louise; and brother, Marion. Survivors: daughter, L. Diane (Keith) Rodwell, Summerville, South Caroli- na; son, Kent Houghton, Kingston; three grandchil- dren, Rodney (Rebecca) Houghton, Curtis (Misty) Houghton, and Shelby Houghton; five great- grandchildren, Alexandra Houghton, Anisten Houghton, Isaac Houghton, Abram Houghton and Sara Houghton; sister, Martha Raines, Hamilton; and nu- merous nieces and nephews. Funeral Service: 2 p.m., Friday, May 31, 2019, at the Kingston Church of the Nazarene. Visitation: Thursday, May 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church. Interment: The Kingston Cemetery, Kingston. Memorials: The Kingston Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements: Bram Funeral Home, Hamilton.
