Biography

Margaret was a nurse and then in book sales and traveled throughout the US until WW II. Shortly before WW II she moved to Los Angeles CA. During WW II she served as a civilian special agent in domestic intelligence assigned to the US department of Labor. Approximately in 1944 she moved to Ojai Ca where she started the Houghton School. She was one of the first to believe that special needs children could benefit from instruction, speech, physical and other therapy while living in a residential environment. Previously such children were generally warehoused in state institutions or hidden away from society by their families. Some of her students were able to return to their families and communities and able to live with significant independence. She continued as director of the school until shortly before her death.
