Obituary

"Miss Hannah Martin was born in what is known as the Catfish community,
Edgar County, Ill., February 25, 1842. At the age of 11 years she moved to
Paris, Ill., where she lived until her marriage to S. B. Houghton of near
Horace, Ill., March 10, 1861 and resided there until her death on October
18, 1919, being 77 years, eight months and 23 days of age.

"To this union were born ten children, two having preceded her in death,
one an older daughter, who died about 50 years ago, and the other a son, who
died about 36 years ago.

"She leaves to mourn her departure, one son, Charley Houghton of Horace,
Ill; seven daughters, Mrs. D. N. Johnson and Mrs. C. N. Henson of Spencer,
Ind; Mrs. Mary Scarbery of Worley, Idaho; Mrs. Jennie Carpenter, Percy,
Ill; Mrs. Tillie Fulton, Mrs. Nelle Goodwin and Minnie Houghton of Horace,
Ill; one stepson, J.W. Houghton of Terre Haute, Ind., another stepson, J. P.
Houghton, preceded her in death, but whose widow attended the services; two
brothers, J. J. Martin of Bee, Nebr. and McClure Martin of this community,
36 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and
friends.

"The deceased was converted years ago and united with the Horace Baptist
church in 1903 under the pastorate of Rev. J. L. Ryan. She lived a devoted
Christian life until her death and was loved by all who knew her. She
possessed that spirit of Christ that gave to the world a clear conception of
the Christ life. All the community had confidence in her religion and her
God."³
