PEORIA -- John C. Houghton, 84, of 602 S. Barnewolt Drive died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 1994, at Methodist Medical Center.

Born June 3, 1910, in Decatur to John C. and Alpha Arnold Houghton, he married Ruby A. Tuttle on Dec. 31, 1930, in Knoxville. She died Dec. 19, 1988, in Peoria. Four sisters and one grandson also preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Wing of Peoria and Karen Burkhart of Fremont, Calif; three sons, Gordon and Dennis, both of Peoria, and John of Bixby, Okla; one brother, Cliff of Pekin; three sisters, Dorothy Hudgens of Peoria, Marge Heiken of Normal and Audrey Van Pelt of Rapid City, S.D; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

He was the vehicle maintenance superintendent for the U.S. Postal Service in Peoria for 30 years, retiring in 1966. He later was the director of the Peoria County Civil Defense from 1966 to 1979. He was a member of the Illinois National Guard.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. The Rev. Albert Musgrove will officiate. Visitation will be one half-hour before services at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded, and burial of ashes will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.

John D. Houghton, 80, of Springfield, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014. He was born September 23, 1934 in Peoria, IL. to John C. and Ruby A. (Tuttle) Houghton. He married Beverly A. Keister September 26, 1964 in Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gordon.

Surviving are his wife Beverly and three sons, John, of Norman, OK, Joseph, of Friendswood, TX, and Christopher, of Springfield, MO; two sisters, Karen Burkhart of Fremont, CA, Jane Wing of Millington, TN, and one brother, Dennis Houghton, of Peoria; additionally, eight nieces, three nephews, and six grandchildren survive. John was a United States Air Force veteran stationed in Japan and Scott AFB, IL during the 1950's.

John worked for United States Postal Service for 32 years retiring in 1989. Following his retirement from the Post Office he enjoyed volunteering at Mercy Hospital's Whiteside Endoscopy Department.

Funeral and burial services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 27, 2014, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO. Published in the News-Leader on Oct. 26, 2014⁴
