BiographyA merchant in New London, CT and a senior member of Haven, Williams & Co. (formerly Williams & Haven), a sealing and whaling company. With San Francisco parties, his company controlled the Alaska seal business by contract with the government. He taught Sunday school in Waterford CT for years. He contributed a memoir of his half sister Mrs. Francis M. Caulkins, the historian, to NEHGR in 1869. He served in the general assembly of CT, as a republican presidentiial elector in 1872. He was the republican candidate for governor of CT in 1873. He was vice-president of the CT historical society in 1876 and was a member of NEHGS since Nov. 16, 1869.

Biographical sketch :

Connecticut whaling and sealing merchant. A partner in the firm of Haven & Smith, New London. He was the instigator with other Eastern and Western shipowners of a company that secured the monopoly of seal fisheries at St.Paul and St.George islands in Alska. Later he was interested in the New London & Norwich railroad as well as in three Connecticut banks. He was prominent in New London, of which he was mayor and representative in the State Assembly, but he failed to get elected to the office of governor of Connecticut in 1873.4

Biography"After leaving the common schools he became a clerk in the dry goods store of Joseph Weston, where he worked from the time he was fifteen until he was seventeen years old. Then entering the Amoskeag machine shop he worked two year's at the tinner's trade. Afterward he learned the plumber's trade, while in the eemploy of Thomas A. Lane, and later took service with the People's Gaslight Company of Manchester, where he has been employed for twenty years, and for a number of years has been foreman of repairs...For the past thirty years he has been a call member of the Manchester Fire Company. He is also a member of Wildey Lodge, No. 45, Independent Order of Odd Fellows."1
