Biography

Adams: "He was a Theologian of considerable eminence, and published several able productions relating to the Theological controversies of his time; most of which, if not all, may be seen in the Archives of the Hist. Society of Boston. According to Farmer, he descended from Ralph Hemenway, who was of Roxbury in 1634. He had a large family, but I have not been able, with much inquiry, to learn anything of them. The letters, addressed to such as were supposed to know most concerning them, have not been answered."; ME Families: After preaching in various MA and NH towns, he preached at the Wells First Church. After staying for a year he was ordained pastor there on 8 Aug. 1759, remaining until his death in 1811. His sermons were noted for their practical Calvinism and for their length. Though not fully appreciated by his parishioners, Dr. Hemmenway was considered one of the most eminent theologians of his day. He baptized 1, 652 persons.^10,3
