MARY MARIE CADOTTE AND LYMAN MARCUS WARREN DESCENDANTS
CHILD: William Whipple Warren born 5/27/1825 La Pointe/Madeline Island, WI. He suffered from lung problems for many years and died from tuberculosis on June 1, 1853 in St Paul, MN. William's education started at a mission school at Mackinac, MI and with the urging of his grandfather Lyman, him his brothers and sister Julia went to Clarkson and the Oneida Institute in Whitesboro, New York. On 8/10/1843 at La Pointe/Madeline Island he married Mathilda Aitken – born 1822 in Sandy Lake, MN and baptized at La Pointe/Madeline Island 9/13/1835 and died 10/22/1902 White Earth, MN. She was the daughter of William Alexander Aitken and Gin cumig oke. Gin cumig oke lived at Sandy Lake, MN and was part of the removal to the newly formed White Earth Settlement where she was the first person to die in the newly created Reservation 9/1/1868. William Alexander was an Indian trader. Aiken County is named after him. In the 1860 Census – 7 years after William died - Mathilda 39 was living in the household of John Thompson 23 who was a teamster born in Ohio. There was also a Nelly Jane Thompson 3 born in MN. Could this be her daughter or was she a nanny for this little girl?
In the fall of 1845, Warren moved from Madeline Island to Crow Wing and became the Postmaster. While living in Crow Wing, he was elected to the Minnesota Territory Legislature for Morrison County in 1850. Elected from Crow Wing to represent Benton, Mahkahto, Pembina and Wahthnahta counties. He resigned while in office due to a protest and lost his bid for reelection. He was also an interpreter, historian and a farmer. He had 4 children while in office. In 1852 William completed a manuscript, History of the Ojibwa People. After William’s death – Mathilda married Louis Fontaine who lived in White Earth. Under the Dawes Act, she was allotted land on the White Earth Reservation as "Mathilda Fontaine." She died October 19, 1902. William signed the Treaty of Fond du Lac 1847.3
