ProblemPossibility that Elisabeth Garfield was Joshua Sr's wife, not Joshua Jr. Only JWH and MLM give her as wife of Joshua Jr.
Nancy Wilson: My husband is descended from Joshua Jr's sister Vashti Houghton. In doing her line I noticed that her father, Joshua Sr, was widowed relatively early in his life but, unlike most men of the time, there was no mention of a second marriage. His surviving children were certainly not infants but, nonetheless, he was left with children under the age of 10 and one would expect him to marry if only to provide care for these children. One reason for men not marrying, I have found, is that they 'take off' on a spirited adventure, ie go West, strike out for the gold fields, whatever. However, Joshua Sr seems to have stayed very local as evidenced by the filing of his will in Worcester. So, we are left with the inference that he remained a widower for 35- 40 years and died the widower of Elizabeth Bennett.

Meanwhile we appear to have his son marrying, Elisabeth Garfield/Gaffel, in 1746 (about 5 yrs into his father's widowhood) having no children, and this wife dying soon enough/young enough to allow him to marry a 2nd time and have a family.

Is it all possible? Absolutely. But barring proof positive, we must hold out the possibility that Joshua Sr re-married, to Elisabeth Garfield, after 5 yrs or so of being a widower.
CJV: Lancaster and Shrewsbury (just Joshua, no Sr or Jr) VRs give marriage of Joshua (not Joshua Jr) Houghton and Elizabeth Garfield/Gaffell11
Notewere among the original grantees of Newfane, VT per MLM. CJV: may be Saul's son Joshua (given as Joshua Jr at marriage)7

BurialWestminster West Cemetery, Westminster, Windham Co., VT, USA, West Parish Cemetery24
BiographyWestminster Hx: Jonathan HOUGHTON came from Bolton, Mass., and settled on the farm on which A. D. Kerr now lives. He was a farmer and a noted hewer of timber. He was a Revolutionary soldier and was wounded in the battle of Bennington. His son Asa spent his life on the homestead. The latter's son, F. J. HOUGHTON, was born and still lives in the town.      History of the Town of Westminster, from the "Gazetteer and Business Directory of Windham County, Vt., For 1724-1884," Compiled and Published By Hamilton Child. Published 1884. Page 304 [57] - 304 [76].

Harrington: Jonathan moved from Bolton, MA, to Putney, VT, where he lived 8 to 10 years after his marriage, as shown by the birth of children there from 1778 to 1784. About 1786 he moved to Westminster VT where he lived the remainder of his life and where his last six children were born. He was a farmer. (VR, State House, Montpelier VT)11,25
ResearchCJV: JWH, p. 311, erroneously states that he was married to Sarah Houghton (dau. of James and Mary (Jones) Houghton) [before his birth !!; this Sarah, was actually his mother]; on p. 324, gives Joanna Burgh;
BT: "The record of Jonathan, son of Lieutenant Jonathan and Sarah (Houghton) Houghton as given in the genealogy on pages 324 and 346 is incomplete and manifestly incorrect. It reads that Jonathan was born in 1769 and married Joanna Burg (Burge?) who was born in 1755 and died in 1784. The names of eleven children are given, dates ranging from 1778 (when the father was nine years old) to 1802. Six children were born later than 1784, the date given for Joanna's death. Three of the sons, Samuel, John, and Asa, have a further record, but the five daughters have only a birth date..."26,2
ProblemCJV: JWH gives this Jonathan as son of Lt. Jonathan Houghton and Thankful White. Not in Leominter VRS with other sybs.
CJV: Unclear if all citations to a Jonathan of Putney VT are the same Jonathan of Leominster MA; Lt. Jonathan's son Jonathan was in Putney from 1776 to 1784 and all the Putney citations may refer to him, not his father.

Boston Transcript, 11/12/1924: W.B.B.N.: born posthumously to father. In Oct. 29, 1723 agreement, Josiah, deceased, who left posthumous child, Stephen; In a division of April 26, 1726, the posthumous son of Josiah was called Josiah....In 1726, she [mother] was given guardianship of her son, Josiah, in his third year.7
AlertJWH: gives earlier Josiah as married to Bethesda and Whitney; BT: "It is evident one or more generations have been combined in this statement [J.W. Houghton's list]. Josiah, born 1682, certainly did not serve in the revolution as he would have been ninety years of age. It is also apparent that he was not the father of all of the children assigned to him. If the father of the children born between 1748 and 1766 was named Josiah, it is evident that he must have been of a later generation, and born about 1725, not 1682. Has this apparent error in the Houghton Genealogy been corrected in any magazine, and if so, of what date?"23
