Notes for Henry (1) (Haney) AVERY
That Henry (Haney) is the father of Nehemiah C. Avery and Uriah Avery is supported by evidence but is not proven. The evidence is primarily from the 1850 census where “Haney” (age 76) and “Alby” (age 61), believed to be Henry and Abigail, are a separate household in the same dwelling as Nehemiah. The 1840 census also shows one man (age 60-69) and one woman (age 60-69) of the appropriate ages in the household of Nehemiah.1315 1317

Further evidence is a Court document in which Abigail Avery lists heirs and next of kin to her husband, Henry Avery, who died intestate. She names Nehemiah C. Avery as first of kindred and Uriah Avery second but does not state their precise relationship to Henry Avery. Nehemiah might be named first as the first born or elder brother (supported by census data) 1318

Further evidence is a newspaper notice advising the Sheriff’s sale of land in Pound Ridge, Westchester Co., NY belonging jointly to the three men: Henry Avery, Nehemiah Avery and Uriah Avery. 1320
