Notes for Edward(1) MOZINGO
A negro, apprentice by indenture to Col. John WALKER. Circumstantial evidence leads some to the conclusion that Edward MOZINGO was, in fact, an illegitimate son of Col. John WALKER.753However, recent DNA analyses may throw doubt on this.
Edward sued Dr. John STONE, husband of Col. John WALKER’s widow, for his freedom after 28 years of indentured service. He was judged to be a free man on 5 October 1672.753,755
Noted by Genealogist Gareth L. Mark, “I wish that I could claim your ancestor Edward MOZINGO as one of my own. He must have been quite a man to have risen from virtual slavery to the point where his sons were educated apparently successful businessmen”.753
Edward lived in Old Rappahannock Co. which became Richmond Co., VA753
The name MOZINGO may have been taken from a member of the Accawmack Nation named MASANGO who owned land on the Eastern shore of Virginia. His name is preserved today on Masongo Creek, which ran through his land.753,755
