Biography
She worked at the steelworks in Scunthorpe on 7/6 per week. That was in the days when a pair of stockings cost 2/6. Evidently, her first marriage should never have happened, as they were, according to Joan "incompatible". She lived at her parents' home in Scunthorpe with son John, and attended teacher's training college in Peterborough, where she met George Slee in about 1950.

I cannot find hard evidence of a marriage to George Horsman Slee - evidently, he was very supportive when Joan was going through her separation from her first husband.

According to Joan, he was a charming man, but "a bit of a rogue" as far as women were concerned. Not quite sure what that means.

My wife Georgina related that George walked out on April 1st 1953 with the words often used on that day - and was never seen or heard from again, leaving Joan to bring up his two children. I would like to add that I am not sure that this is a true story or not – this is certainly what Georgina believed but George's character does not fit easily with this image - so I am sure that we do not know the full story - and will never know.

I don't believe that they were ever married because George was already married to Mary ... and she would not divorce him. Secondly, I can find no evidence of her divorce from Robert Ferraby, although that may have happened. If I am right, then both were separated from their spouse.

Their children, William and Georgina)'s surnames were changed by Deed Poll to Ferraby so that all three of her children carried the same surname - thus avoiding difficult questions at school ... and shaking heads in the High Street. The matter of “who was my father” was never discussed and it was only when issues relating to passports and father’s nationality were raised when we were coming to Australia that some of this information was discussed.

Judging by the views of Joan's siblings and their families, there may well be more this story ... and indeed there are rumours that she may have had several other relationships much to the dismay of her family including her children.

John Ferraby did tell me that he came home from school one day to find the vicar unfrocked so to speak .. er .. well, you can guess. Such a colourful image. Joan gave the same son John a silver ring that she said came from a Polish prisoner of war. We do not know why or what the ring represents - but I think we can guess.

Joan was a very intelligent, strong woman … she came to Australia to stay with us maybe 6 times often for 3 months at a time .. I liked her very much.

I have not found any evidence that they were ever actually married in the traditional sense of the times, although the name change by deed poll in 1960 might suggest so, yet some doubt remains. There is no doubt that George and Joan lived together and had two children, William and Georgina.
