Narrative:

     Harold Alban Ryden was born on 3 Jul 1900 in Fridhem, Kittson Co., Minnesota. The location of the Fridhem community in Kittson Co. as been lost. Only a few references can be found to a former Lutheran congregation of that name.9,10,11 He was baptized on 22 Jul 1900 in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock, Minnesota.4 He was baptized as Alban Harold but seems to have been called Harold Alban from a young age.4
     He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Thompson Twp., Kittson Co., Minnesota, in the household of his parents, Charles A. Ryden and Mathilda [surname unknown].5
     Harold registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at Hallock, Kittson Co., Minnesota, reporting he was employed as as a farm laborer, working for his father.1 He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Thompson Twp., Kittson Co., Minnesota, in the household of his parents.6
     He was a farm laborer in Minnesota.16 Harold went to Canada to work, crossing the border 22 Apr 1921 about 25 miles from his home, at Emerson, Manitoba.17 He said he was carrying $25, and was going to work on the farm of J. M. Lohr, about 90 miles further north, in Sperling. Mr. Lohr had farmed 7,500 acres in Minnesota, but disposed of it in 1919 to move his operations to Manitoba where he purchased 7,200 acres near Gunton, and rented 3,200 acres near Sperling.18,17
     Lohr died in Feb 1924. Whether Harold stayed in Canada until then is not known, but he had moved to Illinois by 1925.19
     Harold married Ada Margaret Schuck, daughter of George W. Schuck and Katherine Elizabeth Oetzel, on 12 Apr 1925 in Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, with Rev. E. A. Watkins officating.12,13,14
     Harold and Ada appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 303½ E. Green, enumerated 3 Apr 1930, reporting they were renting their home, for $35 per month and owned a radio. Their son William was listed as living with them. They were living around the corner from her parents, who were living on South Vine.20
     By 1930 he was an electrician, working for the University of Illinois. In 1940 he reported he had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $2,160.21,22
     Harold and Ada appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 204 Urbana Ave., enumerated 14 Apr 1940, reporting they were renting their home, for $30 per month, and had lived in the same town in 1935. Their children William and Robert were listed as living with them.23
     Harold died in Jun 1975 at age 74.15
