Anna Hanour Souhan

F, b. 1829, d. 20 March 1863
Anna Hanour Souhan was christened on 7 October 1828 at Balyna, Kildare, Ireland; This is probably noth the correct Ann Souhan. See Brick Walls and Grey Areas.1 She was born in 1829 at Dublin, Ireland.2,3 She was the daughter of Patrick Souhan. Anna Hanour Souhan married David J. Shaw, son of Thomas Shaw and Sarah Maher, on 14 August 1853 at Seneca Falls, Seneca, New York, USA.4,5 Anna Hanour Souhan died on 20 March 1863 at Aurelius, Cayuga, New York, USA; Childbirth.she was buried on 20 March 1863 at Cold Springs Cemetery, Auburn, Cayuga, New York, USA.6
See comments in Souhan topic in Brick Walls and Gray Areas in this project.
The baptismal records for all of the children of David and Anna Souhan Shaw are recorded in St. Patrick's Church in Seneca Falls and every one gives her maiden name as Sullivan. Anna and James Souhan from Fayette, NY are definitely siblings, validated by family stories for both families and by DNA confirmation. James's civil war records say his father's name was Patrick. The handwritten record by Anna's granddaughter said that the Souhans were from Dublin, and that another brother, went south and was never heard of again.

Perhaps there was an initial attempt to Americanize the name, or the pronunciation may have sounded like Sullivan, but these entries in Seneca Falls seem to be errors. Shortly before his death in 2019, I visited Lee Shaw, a greatgrandson of Anna's, to ask him if he had any knowledge of why the name Sullivan was used. He was very weak and ill, so not able to engage in conversation more than a word or two, but when I brought up the name, and what I had found in the church records, he became very animated, shook his head, and said "No! No!" By asking yes or no questions, I was able to ascertain that he had seen or heard this Sullivan name used before and that it was a mistake. He again reinforced that the proper name was Souhan. She immigrated on 31 December 1849 to On the ship Z.Z; The most likely boat list for Ann Souhan is one in Dec 30, 1849. This Ann was a chambermaid,24 yrs old traveling alone. Ann Souhan Shaw's 1855 census says she had been in Aurelius, NY for 5 yrs, her husband, David, 4. James Souhan was in Fayette, Seneca Falls in the 1860 census, but Seneca County has no surviving state censuses, so nothing to see for him in the 1855 census. I did not find anyone in the 1850 census for either.7 She immigrated on 27 May 1851; On the Lady-Hobart from Dublin. This entry is probably a different Ann Souhan.3 She witnessed the birth of Mary Shaw on 20 June 1862 at New York, USA.8

  1. [S170] The Auburn Citizen, 28 Sep 1918 James M. Nolan of 19 Parker Street, died this morning at the age of 78. A simple cronicle, but it recalls to the minds of many of the former generation, a kind and faithful servant. For over fifty years James Nolan has been working the same garden and about the place at 194 Genesee Street. Fifty one years ago he took service with the late Alonzo G. Beard si ey as a gardener. His employer lived out his alotted time and the one time infant toddling about by the side of the indulgent gardener is n0w Porter Beardsley.
Fiftyone years of service at one place is a record seldom heard of in these days of the transitorineas of hired help, but it is not this alone that has impressed his employers. It
is that he was a gentleman, and as such the men who knew him desire to see his memory honored. James Nolan was born in Queens County. Ireland, and came to America as a young man. Nearly fifty years ago he married Elizabeth Shaw, who still survives him. There were no children, excepting one daughter whn died some years ago. One brother, Michael Nolan living in Auburn, is the only other relative Hving. James fell from a tree in the garden that has been his pride for over a half century a week ago. It was as the result of the injury sustained then that he passed out today with the benediction of the Beardsley family, "well done, good and faithful servant."
He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St Mary's Church, who will go to the home Sunday evening in a body. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at his late home at 9: with services at St. Mary's Church at 9:30 o'clock; the burial will toe in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Margaret Donahue

F, b. 1809, d. 25 October 1896
Margaret Donahue was born in 1809 at Ireland.1 She married John Shaw, son of Thomas Shaw and Sarah Maher, on 8 January 1832 at Tinryland, Carlow, Ireland.2 Margaret Donahue died on 25 October 1896 at 51 Bradford St., Auburn, Cayuga, New York, USA; Old age3,4she was buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fleming, Cayuga, New York, USA.
There is a question regarding whether the Margaret Keating who married John Shaw in Tinryland is, indeed, the same Margaret Donohue who was the mother of all the other children in this family.
The baptismal record for Eleanor Shaw says her mother's name was Keating. A letter written by one Margaret's descendants says her name was Keathing, but that the rest of her family all said Donohue.
No other marriage record is found for a John Shaw and Margaret Donohue, and no other baptismal record for an Ellen or Helen Shaw with the mother of Margaret Donohue is found. Margaret Donahue was also known as Margaret Keating.5 She witnessed the christening of David J. Shaw on 18 June 1829 at Castledermot Church, Castledermot, Kildare, Ireland,No absolute proof that the Margaret Donahue given as witness for David J. Shaw's christening. However, David's eldest brother subsequently married a Margaret Donahue, so there is an assumption that these two Margarets are one and the same person. The spelling of the surname on the christening record provided by the Kildare Heritage Society is Donoghue.6 Margaret Donahue lived on 23 June 1842 at Knocknagee, Kildare, Ireland; A deposition was filed against Margaret Shaw, wife of John Shaw from Knocknagee alleging mistreatment of a child placed with her for care. She immigrated circa 1882.7

Sarah Maher

F, d. after 1850
Sarah Maher was the daughter of John Maher. Sarah Maher married Thomas Shaw, son of Laurence Shaw and Helen German, circa 1811 at Ireland; No record of a marriage for Thomas and Sarah is found in the Castledermot Church records, nor anywhere in the Kildare Heritage Society's database. They suggest that the wedding took place at the home church of Sarah, perhaps in a different County. Date for marriage is estimated from date of first child's birth. Sarah Maher died after 1850.
She There were a small number of Maher families in the vicinity of Knocknagee and because of the absence of Maher sponsors for the children of Thomas and Sarah, it is a distinct possibility that Sarah was the daughter of John Maher [died 24th of October 1800 aged 36] and Mary Glyndon and grand daughter of Patrick Maher who are buried in Ballaghmoon cemetary. John Maher and three of his children died young, which would mean that Sarah Maher Shaw had very few siblings. It could also account for the eldest child being christened John and the second eldest christened Laurence.
There are two Maher headstones in Ballaghmoon cemetary with some duplicate inscriptions and they read:

Headstone 1:     Erected by John Maher in loving memory of his father Patrick Maher who died a.d. 1790 with his sister Mary and brother Edward who died young. His daughter Beth Julia Dowling died Jan 23rd 1845.

Headstone 2:     Here lies the body of John Maher who died 24/10/1800 aged 36. Also his father and three of his children.
His wife Mary Glyndon Maher - Her father John Glyndon 1798 Blacksmith caught making pikes. He rushed the soldiers, reached the Barrow through Cox's Lane - swam towards the bridge in constant fire - his hand was seen to rise as he sank; the body was never recovered.

When Thomas and Sally lived in Ballaghmoon townland, two houses from them lived a Matthew Maher. This could possibly be a brother.1

Thomas Shaw

M, b. 1791, d. after 1850
Thomas Shaw was born in 1791 at Knocknagee Townland, Kildare, Ireland, LDS search gives date taken from Castledermot Church records, but no actual birth date or location is found recorded to Lawrence and Helen German Shaw.1 He was the son of Laurence Shaw and Helen German. Thomas Shaw married Sarah Maher, daughter of John Maher, circa 1811 at Ireland; No record of a marriage for Thomas and Sarah is found in the Castledermot Church records, nor anywhere in the Kildare Heritage Society's database. They suggest that the wedding took place at the home church of Sarah, perhaps in a different County. Date for marriage is estimated from date of first child's birth. Thomas Shaw died after 1850. Death date is esitmated for Thomas and his wife Sally because they were found in both the Scully's census and Griffith's Valuation, both done between 1840 and 1850, so death occurred after these were done.
He appeared on the Scully's census between 1840 and 1850 at Knocknagee Townland, Kildare, Ireland. Scully's Census was conducted in the 1840's and included the Townland of Knocknagee. Thomas Shaw's family is found with household members: Thomas, sons Pat, Thomas - , Larry, Davy, wife Sally (Mahar), dau. Mary, who emmigrated to America prior to the enumeration. No mention is made of Michael, who was m. 1843 and lived in Tinryland. The next household listed was for John and his w. Margaret Donoghue with daughters Ellen, Mary and Biddy.2 He lived between 1840 and 1850 at Ballaghmoon Parish, Knocknagee Townland, Kildare, Ireland, Griffith's Valuation shows a property for Thomas Shaw with a house and 2 acres of land. A house next door is sublet to son, John.3
