Newitt Vick Ponder was born in Arkansas, probably on 10 April 1881.1,3 (The 1900 census lists his birth date as April 18811, and he gave the date as 10 April 1881 when he registered for the World War I draft in 1918.3 This date is also consistent with his age of 38 in the 1920 census, when the official census date was 1 January.4 He understated his age in later census years, and his World War II draft registration and his death certificate both say 10 April 1884.5,2 And, his World War II draft registration says he was born in Camden, Ouachita Co., while his obituary says in Locust Bayou, Calhoun Co.)6 He married first Mary Elizabeth McAnn, daughter of Robt. L. McAnn and Mary Francis McGee, about 1912 (based on the birth date of their daughter Elizabeth).7,8 He married second Minnie McWilliams on 15 September 1925 in Columbia Co., Arkansas.9 He died on 22 January 1965 at Magnolia Hospital in Magnolia, Columbia Co., at age 83.2 He was buried at Magnolia Memorial Park Cemetery in Magnolia.2
He is listed in the 1900 census living with his mother in Caswell Twp., Calhoun Co., Arkansas,, and working as a truck driver for a lumber company.1
When he registered for the World War I draft in September 1918, he was living in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, and working there as a machinist in planing mill owned by the Victoria Lumber Co.3, while his wife Mary, and presumably their children, were living in Haughton, Bossier Parish, Louisiana.3 In 1920 he was living as a boarder with the family of Bascom F. Owen in Emerson, Columbia Co., Arkansas. He's listed in the census as married, but his wife Mary is not listed with him, and she has not been found in the census.4
He's listed with his second wife Minnie in Brister Twp., Columbia Co., Arkansas, in the 1930 census, along with his children Elizabeth and Morris [sic] from his first marriage.8 By 1940 they had moved to Kingsland, Cleveland Co., Arkansas.10 He's listed in Johnson Twp., Union Co., Arkansas, in 195011, while Minnie is listed as a patient at the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Booneville, Logan Co., Arkansas.12 He was working as a foreman in a plaining mill in 1930 and 19408,10, and as a lumber company moulderman in 1950.11
At some point before September 1918 he lost the ends of four fingers on his right hand. (Possibly in a work-related accident?)3
