He went by his middle name David, or Dave.2,4
When he registered for the World War II draft in February 1941 he was working for his wife's uncle Ed Bowditch in Mitchell Co., North Carolina, probably at his apple orchard.1 His death certificate lists his occupation as an assembler in the manufacturing field.4

- [S3346] His death certificate lists his parents' names as James Jones and Nancy Childers, but his mother's name is apparently an error. The Bowditch genealogy by Frederick Bowditch names his mother as Nancy McKinney, and this is consistent with other sources. There's a marriage record for James Jones and Nancy McKinney, 30 June 1901 in Bakersville [Ancestry North Carolina, Marriage Records, 1741-2011]. And the death certificate for Nancy McKinney Jones, who died 16 July 1960 in Bakersville Twp., lists her parents as Dave and Eliza McKinney, and the informant as James A. Jones [Ancestry North Carolina, Death Certificates, 1909-1976, Cert. No. 21260].
