These are two letters from Martha (Abbot) Thorndike, one to her nephew Nathaniel Bowditch at the Point Lookout prison camp, and the second to Nathaniel’s mother (and Martha's sister) Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch. The second letter was enclosed with the first, for Nathaniel to hand-deliver when he returned home, or to forward. These were apparently confiscated by the government, and thus never delivered.
