Military Service

     Henry Newton began military service circa August 1812 at Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA, when he joined the US Army and his copmpany was marching to the relief of General Hull at Detroit when they learned of his surrender. They returned to Erie where the company had been raised and he was mustered out. Later, he worked in the parties getting timber for the consturction of Admiral Perry's ships. These were used on Lake Erie when Admiral Perry won the Battle of Put-In Bay on 10 Sep 1813.2,3,1
     The following obituary appeared in the weekly newspaper The Lawrenceburg Register published in Lawrenceburg, Indiana 16 June 1881:
DEATH OF AN AGED PIONEER.
     Died, in this city, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Sykes, on Monday morning, June 13th, 18S1, Mr. HENRY NEWTON, in the ninety-second year of his age. Ile was born in Vermont. About the year 1800 his parents removed to Western New York. In his early youth he resided near Erie, Pa., and helped to get out the timber of which the United States vessels were built with which Commodore Perry won his glorious victory on Lake Erie. Mr. Newton entered the United States Army and was on the march to Detroit for the relief of Gen'l. Hull; but the surrender having taken place, his company returned to Erie, Pa., where he was mustered out. Mr. Newton has lived in this county and Hamilton county, Ohio, or we might say in this vicinity for upwards of sixty years, and in his declining years he received the loving, faithful care of his, daughter, Mrs. Marry (sic) Ann Sykes. His remains were deposited in the Greendale Cemetery on yesterday afternoon.1
