     Alternatively, he was born on the same date at South Bay, Manitoulin Island, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada, according to the US Social Security index.5 He was born on 3 December 1889 at Tehkummah Twp., Manitoulin Island, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada, according to Ontario Birth Registration 001560.1,3,4 Alternatively, he may have been born on 3 December 1888 at Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada, according to his WWI enlistment papers.6
     John Elliott Owen died on 27 January 1940 at USA at age 50.5

     John James (J.J.) Owen(s) and Mary Elizabeth Elliott of Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, married in 1889. John, who died in 1906, was a fisherman. They had four children: John Elliott, Joseph Stuart (who enlisted as Stuart Owen), Margaret (commonly know as Birdie), and Sarah (Violet).

Analysis:
     In the 1911 census, Stuart appears to have been lodging in Asquith. His mother and sisters were in Asquith by 1912. By 1920, the family had moved to Detroit, where the trail goes cold.7

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Elliott Owen began military service on 24 October 1914 at the age of 24 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 28th Battalion. He was an unmarried labourer with active militia experience. He was described as being 5' 9 1/2" with a dark complexion, grey eyes and black hair. He was assigned regimental number 73689.8
     On 29 May 1915, at Montréal, Québec, Canada, he embarked with his unit on the "S.S. Northland."9
     On 17 September 1915, he went to France with the 28th Battalion.10
     On 24 June 1916 in or near St. Eloi, Belgium, received a gun shot wound (G.S.W.) to his right thigh. He was a Corporal at this time. St. Eloi had been the scene of fighting since the British detonated 6 large "galleries" of explosives under no man's land on 27 Mar 1916. Most of the action was over by 16 Apr 1916. He was treated at St. Eloi, Boulogne, Bristol and finally at Epsom where he had an operation on his wound. He was discharged on 26 Aug 1916.8,11,12
     On 14 August 1918, he was wounded again, this time by shrapnel in the left thigh. He was treated at Tranville and Etaples where he was discharged on 20 Sep 1918. On 3 Dec 1918 he was treated for trench foot and was discharged on 21 Dec 1918.13 Pte. Elliott Owen ended military service as part of general demobilization on 14 February 1919 at London, Ontario, Canada, after serving in France with the 28th Battalion.

His birth registration confirms this date, but gives South Bay in Tehkummah Twp. as his birth place.4,5 Alternatively, he may have been born on 9 February 1890 at Ontario, Canada, according to the 1901 census3; or, circa 1892 at Canada according to the 1920 US census.2 Stuart married Frances E. Wood, at the home of the bride's father, J. F. Wood, on 3 August 1920 at Delisle, RM of Loganton, Saskatchewan, Canada.6 Joseph Stuart Owen and Frances E. Wood were divorced before 1930.7

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Stuart Owen began military service on 1 July 1915 at the age of 24 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, joining the 66th Battalion. He was an unmarried coal miner with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 8 1/2" tall with a clear complexion, light brown eyes and brown hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his mother, Mary E. Owen of Asquith, Saskatchewan. He was assigned regimental number 100255.4
     On 28 September 1918, at France, received a gun shot wound to his right knee and was admitted to No. 4 General Hospital, Dannes Camieres. He was evacuated to Epsom Hospital in England and discharged on 28 Oct 1918.9 Joseph Stuart Owen ended military service as part of general demobilization on 4 April 1919 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada,

     A pretty but quiet wedding was solemnised at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Wood, of Delisle, Sask., Tuesday. August 3. when their daughter. Frances E., became the bride of Mr. Stuart Owen, of Detroit. Mich. The bride was charming in white satin and georgette and white picture hat and carried a bouquet of white carnations, sweet peas and fern. She was attended by her sister. Miss Margaret Wood, who wore a soft cream silk and pink hat and carried pink and white sweet peas, and fern. Mr. Owen was supported by Mr. John R. Wood, brother of the bride. Mrs. Kaake and Mr. Cook played the wedding march and during th signing of the register Miss Lillian Miller sang very sweetly "Because." Following the ceremony a dainty lunch was served. Miss Romena Miller presided over the punch bowl and Mrs. A. F. Olson cut the ices.
     Mr. and Mrs. Owen left on th afternoon train for Detroit, Mich.
     The bride's traveling suit was of silk poplin with small hat to match.6
