He was an unmarried farmer with no previus military experience. He was described as being 5' 5" with a medium complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. On his conscription papers he listed his next-of-kin as his father, George Augustus Martin of Juniata P.O.. He was assigned regimental number 277575.1 William Henry Martin ended his military service on 19 June 1918 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, being found medically unfir for service due to a "suppurative discharge from left ear since childhood".

He gave his age as 25, and listed his father's occupation as an Estate Agent. She was a widow, and her late father was a tailor. There is an entry in his service file that his marriage was approved on this date.4,3 Alternatively, they married on 1 December 1916, according to a marginal notation in his service file.3 George married Frances Call, sometime after the death of his wife Rosa in 1942. Frances had been widowed in 1937.5
     George Augustus Harrydine Martin died on 16 October 1965, in a local hospital, at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 69.6,5

Other comments:
     George A. and Connie Martin came to the Juniata district in about 1905. They later moved to Saskatoon, while their sons continued to farm. George was the first of their sons to enlist. He married while in England, and was wounded on the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. When he returned from the war, his wife, a step-son and a two year old daughter followed.7

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     George Augustus Martin of Juniata began military service on 15 May 1915 at the age of 19 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, with his medical examination. On June 12th, at Camp Sewell (later Camp Hughes), Manitoba, his Attestation paper was finalized and he joined the 53rd Battalion. He was an unmarried farmer. He was described as being 5' 6 1/2" with a medium complexion, blue eyes and medium hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, George A Martin of Saskatoon. He was assigned regimental number 440405.3
     On 29 March 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he embarked aboard the S.S. Empress of Britain for England. On June 8th, he transferred to the 42nd Battalion in France.3 On 9 April 1917 at Vimy Ridge, Pas de Calais, France, he received a gunshot wound to his left leg. On April 20th, he was admitted to No. 32 Stationary Hospital at Wimereux. He was then evacuated to England. He was not discharged until Jun 8th.3 Pte. George Augustus Martin ended military service as part of general demobilization on 18 September 1919 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, after service in France for 9 months, and most recently being with the 53rd Battalion, Central Ontario Regimental Depot (C.O.R.D.) He intended to return to Juniata.

     Horace Edward Martin died on 11 August 1992 at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, at age 85 according to B.C. Death Registration 1992-09-014620.1 The informant on his death registration was his wife.1
     His name was also recorded as Horace Leaman.2 He immigrated with his mother, Rosetta Sophia Martin in 1919 to Saskatchewan, Canada, from England.2
