Beloved Mother and Wife Called
Mrs. Walter Maitland Dies in Her Home Monday Night; Funeral Services to be Held on Thursday, Burial in Ohio Grove

Mrs. Walter Maitland, 82 years old, a resident of Sycamore or Sycamore community all of her life, esteemed and well liked, died in her home at 603 DeKalb avenue, shortly after 8 o'clock Monday evening. She had been ill for approximately three weeks, but had been ailing for several years.

Born in Burlington
Evaline Duck, daughter of Simon and Anne Duck, natives of Scarborough, England, was born in Burlington township, January 13, 1858. The family moved to Sycamore township when she was a baby. She was married to Walter Maitland March 6, 1880. They moved to Iowa that year, settling in Boone county. They returned one year later. Mr. Maitland returned in a covered wagon, but Mrs. Maitland, being ill, came home on a train.

Mrs. Maitland belonged to no church and to no clubs. She was a hard working, home loving body, greatly devoted to her husband and family. Of a friendly disposition, she acquired many friends. As age grew upon her, she lost some of her activity, but kept her interest in her family and in her home to the last.

She is survived by her husband; one son, Arthur of Rockford; one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Zwiger, also of Rockford; four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Services will be held from Kebil funeral home at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, the Rev. H. L. Michael officiating, with burial in Ohio Grove cemetery.2

In the obituary of Walter Maitland who died 10 May 1944, Walter's wife, Evaline Duck was listed as predeceased.1

The following newspaper article appeared in the Sycamore, Illinois True Republican 15 September 1909 :
Local and Personal Brevities
"Jane Eyre" last Thursday evening attracted an audience which nearly filled the opera house. It was a high-class, affecting drama presented by a strong cast of talented players, and all who heard it were more than pleased. Dwight A Mead, who played the important part of Rochester is, by the way, a cousin of Arthur Maitland and Mr. Fred Zwiger of Sycamore. His home is at Elgin, where his mother, Mrs. Jennie Mead, resides.5

The following biographical fact was included in an earlier version of the Essanay Studios website published in Chicago, Illinois:
Dwight A. Meade aka Dwight Arthur Meade
(30 January 1885 Elgin, Illinois – 1 April 1963 Danvers, Massachusetts)
He was an actor of longtime stage experience, at the Chicago Essanay studio in 1911 in between theatrical jobs for about a year while having a series of operations on his throat. Later had extensive radio work.11
Dwight Arthur Meade was listed as a survivor in the obituary of Arthur Meade who died 16 November 1914.12 Dwight Arthur Meade registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 in New York, New York, USA.. He listed his next-of-kin/contact person as Janet Meade.3 Dwight A Meade crossed the border on a temporary visit on 31 August 1926 at Lacolle Junction, Québec, Canada. He gave his occupation as an actor, and was en route to The Playhouse in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He listed his mother, Janet Meade as his next of kin.10 He crossed the border on a temporary visit on 24 August 1928 at Sutton, Québec, Canada. His occupation was listed as theatrical, and he was going to the Ottawa Players Company, in Hamilton, Ontario. He was accompanied by his 75 year-old mother, Janet Meade.13
The following biographical information is from my personal research, 1931:
He appeared on Broadway in Branded (24 Sep 1917 to Oct 1917) and in Easy Street (14 Aug 1924 to Aug 1924.) In the later play, he played the "Stranger."

He held the copyright for a three act play, The Stranger in the house. It was listed as a comedy-drama.14,15

He played the character of Harvey Meade in the radio soap opera "Harvey and Dell."
His wife, Doris, played Dell Meade, the mother. Their daughter, Dorothy, played their daughter of the same name.

Between 1 August 1939 and 2 May 1941 they were featured on NBC Blue. They were off the air for about a year, returning to CBS from 8 April 1942 to 24 July 1942.16 Dwight Arthur Meade registered for the "Old Man's" draft on 26 April 1942 in New York, New York. He indicated he was employed by Rowell Shows for Radio.6
