The following biographical information appeared in the book "Prairie Sojourn: Belle Plain, Stony Beach", 1980:
COAN BARWELL HISTORY
by Esther Bayne
Coan George Barwell came west from Muskoka, Ontario in 1903 at twenty years of age.

He worked until 1912 with the Aitkin brothers. While farming with them he purchased the east of 32-16-24W., in 1906 from Harry Hicks. This land was approximately two miles N.E. of Aitkin's.

The buildings were set on the N.W. corner of this half. Today the busy Trans-Canada highway borders the north side. The main line of the C.P.R. (double track) cuts through the south end, leaving forty acres "across the tracks". The Madrid station, loading platform and section house were on railway property, almost directly south of the farm buildings, and the Briercrest grid is on the east side.

When airplanes first became popular the farm seemed to be in the main corridor for air traffic.

In (sic) January 1st, 1912, Coan married Janie Gee White (a niece of the Aitkins) on the Belle Plaine farm. Arrangements were then made for Coan, Gee and baby son Leslie to move to Tullisville, Sask. to help Coan's brother on a homestead there.

Coan's sister Susan, her husband Andrew Murray, and family of seven came from Muskoka to Coan's farm in 1913 and farmed there until spring of 1915, then moved to land Andrew had purchased near Buffalo Lake in the Clinton district.

Coan and Gee continued to farm the land at Tullisville and Belle Plaine with help of Murrays and others until 1919 when the Barwells moved back to their home farm again.

Seven children were born to this couple, Leslie, Clarence, Margaret, Esther, Keith and Pauline. Margaret and Enid died as infants.

We five all went to Leamington School, a mile and a half west on the highway. Teachers that I can recall were Mrs. Hunter, Hazel Wallace, Alice Shea, Louise Branston, and Peggy Gilchrist.

Les started work for the Carefoots in the 1930's with the Arrow Coach Lines, then to the Greyhound Bus Lines in Saskatoon as a driver, mechanic and dispatcher. He married Gertrude Eshpetre. They had two child, Gordon and Fay. Fay died at age 17 in 1967. Les died in 1975.

Gordon married Nancy Schoenals (sic) of Saskatoon and they live in Georgetown, Ontario. They have two children. Gordon was a member of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Team.

Clarence married Cecilia Bryans in 1947 and farmed from 1947 to 1957 on Cecilia's grandparents' farm south of Moose Jaw in the Enterprise District, then onto the Barwell farm from 1957 to 1978 when they sold and retired to Moose Jaw. They have a daughter Elizabeth, married to Gerald Turnbull, now residing in Edmonton. A son David, married Darlene Franklin. They have one daughter, Cherise and live in Moose Jaw.

Esther married Ivan Bayne, and they farm and reside on the Bayne farm in the Tuxford district. They have one son Gerald, living in Regina. Gerald is married to Lynne Wilkinson of Tuxford. They have two sons.

Keith went to work in the bus business, too. He drove for the S.T.C. for some years, then worked as a mechanic for the Greyhound in Saskatoon. He married Blanche Fordyce. They live in Coquitlam, B.C. and Keith is employed with Greyhound in downtown Vancouver. They have two daughters, Barbara and Marnie.

Pauline married Fred Perrault of Moose Jaw. Most of their married lives have been spent in Alberta, several years in Okotoks. Pauline and Fred are now on a small farm at Sunset House, Alberta. They have a family of four, Lynn Martin, Calgary; Bev, marrived (sic) to Lloyd Berght, they have two children and live in Valleyview, Alberta. Two sons Glenn and Barry, both married and live in Calgary

Janie Gee Barwell died in 1944 at the age of 63. Coan George Barwell died in 1970 at 87 years of age.5

Census Data

Gee appeared on the 1901 Canadian Census of Allandale, Simcoe County, Ontario, in the household of George White and Maggie White.3
G Barwell and C G Barwell appeared on the 1916 Census of Canadian Prairie Provinces, RM of Coteau No. 255, Saskatchewan, enumerated 5 June 1916, enumerated as a farmer and a Methodist. Their son Leslie was listed as living with them.4
