Archie Allan
by Andrew Allan
Archie McFee Allan was born in South Dakota, U.S.A in 1890. He immigrated with his parents. Andrew and Janet Allan, to the Cordova. Man. area, at age nine. His youth and young manhood were spent in this district. In March. 1913 he and his good friend Hugh McKee loaded their possessions in a boxcar and came west to Asquith to their respective farms in the Grasby School District. approximately six miles northeast of town.

Dad met and married Ida Grasby, who had, with her parents, come to the Grasby district a few years before the Grasby school was built. She had started school at Eagleholme.

Their first child. Leona (Winnacott) was born in 1915, followed by Andrew (myself) in 1917. Evelyn (Wall) in 1919. Two sons died in infancy, later came John in 1931 and Frank in 1934. Archie and Ida continued to farm, through good times, the thirties and the war years, until 1950. Dad had four horses, two work horses, one brood mare and his pony driver, Maud. Many people will remember her, I know we older children do, as it was on her that we learned to drive and ride. They sold their livestock and unnecessary machinery and effects, then retired to Saskatoon for a short while, later returning to Asquith. They still farmed the land with the help of their two youngest sons until John left to make his own way. Frank stayed on, then purchased the land which he still farms.

Dad passed away in 1968 at the age of 78 years, and Mom passed away in 1978 at the age of 79 years. At the time of Mother's passing, there were five children. 28 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Leona married Charles Winnacott formerly of the Eagle Creek district, they had ten children, five girls, Dorothy, Marjorie. Audrey, Shirley and Norma; five boys, George. Harold. Donald, Jerald and Keith. Their present address is White Fox, Sask.

I, Andrew worked with my dad on the farm until 1941 when I enlisted in the Air Force and spent the next three years as an aero engine mechanic. Returning home, I met and married Alma Grummett of the Grandora district in 1945. We remained on the farm until 1947 when I obtained work with the city for 31 1/2 years then took retirement and returned to Asquith In 1980. We have three children. Barbara resides in Saskatoon with her husband. Dave Werschner and their two children. Robert resides in Melfort with his wife, Sharon (Haley) and their three sons. Judith lives in Maple Ridge, B.C. with her husband. Vince Kowalchuk and their two daughters.

Evelyn married Harry Wall. They have five children, Darlene. Allan. Frances, Betty and Donna. Their present address is Saskatoon.

John married Verna Gordon (daughter of Lorne Gordon and Pearl Sloan). They have six children. Gordon, Cheryl, Carol, Darlene. Melody and Sandra. John works for the Saskatchewan Liquor Board and resides in Fort Qu'Appelle.

Frank married Ella Morrison (her parens reside here in Asquith) in 1955. They have five children. Audrey and Joyce (married and living in Saskatoon), James, June and Ronald live at home. Frank is employed by Western Automotive in Saskatoon but sell operates the old farmstead.

It is a bit nostalgic to be able to go out to the farm and remember the good times, the hard times and the sad times, but I have gone the complete circle and the good memories tar outweigh the bad.6
