John Johnson, the Emigrant, married Mary Heath on 21 September 1613 in Ware, Hertsfordshire, England. They had 10 children, born between about 1614 and 1628/9.2

His wife, Mary, died in May 1629 in Ware, Hertsfordshire, England, leaving him a widower.2



John Johnson, the Emigrant, emigrated in 1630 from England to Massachusetts Bay Colony.2,6 He was a farmer.3 He lived in 1630 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1,3,6 He was a tavern keeper.5,6

His wife, Margery, died in June 1655, leaving him a widower.7



John Johnson, the Emigrant, left a will dated 30 September 1659.1 John's will was proved on on 15 October 1659.2

John Johnson, freeman in 1631. He was generally in public life. He represented this town in the first general court, and for fourteen years afterwards. He was a military man also, and was "appoynted surveyor gererall of all ye armyes." The public stores were placed in his house, and it was when that was burnt and blown up that the town records were destroyed. He died Sept. 29, 1659, leaving 600 pounds. He kept tavern. Many public meetings were held at Brother Johnson's.8

Listed among the Founders of First Church in Roxbury:

John Johnson, farmer, came to Roxbury in 1630 with wife Margery; m. (2) Grace Fawer. Freeman May 18, 1631. Constable 1630. Selectman. Surveyor general of the ammunition, which, while stored in his house, caught fire, blew up the house and all was lost. It was at this time that the records were destroyed. May 8, 1632, he and Robert Cole were chosen from Roxbury to advise with the governor at the next General Court. May 15, 1634, Deputy from Roxbury to the first General Court of Delegates. Artillery Company, 1638. An original donor to the Free Schoole. Died Sept. 30, 1659.

Note: According to Vol 6 (January-March 1997), page 24 of The Great Migration Newsletter, John Johnson was a founder of the Church (member no. 9) and his wife Margery joined the Church in 1633 as member no. 90. They apparently came from Ware in England. John became a Freeman on 19 October 1630.3
