Daniel F. Hammond, a former big league baseball player and umpire, died Thursday. He was 81 and lived in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. Originally from the Boston area, Hammond was a catcher for the New England Lake baseball team in the mid-1920s and later played for the Boston Braves. After his playing days, he umpired in the National League and later in the Pop Warner League. His wife, the former Grace Houghton, died in 1981. He is survived by two daughters, Betty Lonergan and Joanne Abahazy; a son, Richard; 21 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Immaculate Conception Church, Front and Allen streets. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Susquehanna and Bradfield roads, Roslyn, Montgomery County.
