New Albany, IN, USA, Mr. Houghton of Crawford Co., IN, who was concerned in the lynching of a man named Salsgiven, about a year ago, made up his mind to turn State's evidence, and recently gave information to the Prosecuting Attorney against his comrades in the lynching affair. On Sunday night last, Houghton was visited by about 22 disguised men, who gave him a terrible beating with hickory withes, and mutilated his body in a dastardly manner. He recognized 7 or 8 of his former comrades, and efforts are being made to arrest them.¹

The Patchoque Poisoning Case

The case of Capt. Samuel N. Smith, who is charged with attempting to procure his wife's death by means of poison, administered by his servant girl, Annie Houghton, in October last, came up again yesterday before Justice Smith at Patchogue, Long Island. District Attorney Tuthill had a conversation with Capt. Smith, Mrs. Dayton, Annie Houghton, and Justice Smith, and said the examination would have to be adjourned till such time as Mrs. Smith was able to appear. He said the character of the poison had never been ascertained, and an analysis must be made. He reviewed the testimony of the girl Annie Houghton. Mrs Smith is still confined to her room at her father's house, No. 41 Tillary street, Brooklyn.¹

Mrs. Laura Houghton believed for many years that her husband, William W. Houghton, from whom she separated in 1862, was killed while serving in the rebel army. Several months ago her belief was changed, for she found Houghton married to another woman in Mobile, Ala. She had him arrested, but he procured his release by presenting a decree of divorce granted to him against Rose Ann Houghton in the Supreme Court here. Mrs. Houghton asserts that the decree was procured without notice to her, on untruthful testimony, and on a description of the defendant which did not appy to her. She was never named and never known as "Rose Ann," she says. Judge Donohue has issued an order to Houghton to show cause why the decree of divorce should not be set aside as fraudulent.
