In 2003, Robert Charles Anderson wrote, "The claim has been made that Mary married James Houghton of Barnstable, and was the "Mary Haughton, widow," who made her will on 19 January 1685/6."[2]

In her will dated 19 January 1685/6, "mary Haughton widow ye Relict of James Haughton Late of ye Towne of Barnestable ..." made bequests including to, among others, "Thomas Hinckley ... John Hinckley ye Son of abovesd Thomas Hinckley ... Mercy Hinckley ye Daughter of ye sd Thomas Hinckley ... Experience Hinckley ye Daughter of ye sd Thomas Hinckley ... Thankfull Hinckley ye Daughter of sd Thomas Hinckley ... Abigail Hinckley ye Daughter of sd Thomas Hinckley ... Ebenezer Hinckley ye Son of Sd Thomas Hinckley ... Reliance Hinckley ye Daughter of sd Thomas Hinckley.[3]

Anderson further wrote (2003), "no relationship was stated with the Hinckley children, and, on the other hand, she also made a bequest to "the two eldest children of Joseph Potts my brother Edward Potts his eldest son." Since there is no known connection between the Hinckley family and any Potts family, we do not believe that the wife of James Haughton was Mary Hinckley."²
