Biography: This gentleman's life is interesting for us because he founded and directed an orphanage in our town during WWII. After spending a few of his student years in Paris, he returned to New York where he was in 1939 when the war began. Well-known in French administrative and diplomatic circles, he was then sollicited by the Prefect of Nièvre to take care of evacuated or orphan children. He went back to France in April 1940.
Thanks to his personal connections in the United States, and on his own initiative, he procured funds and equipment, hired staff and fitted out existing premises to create establishments suitable for receiving small French evacuees. Between June and August 1940, the war events forced him to move his plans to the unoccupied zone of the country and he chose to establish his project in the Costebelle neighborhood of Hyères.
