Whittier: "John Luey, name sometimes spelled Lewey, Leway, Lewe, Leue, Lucy and Love, was the first of the family to come to America. He was a native of France and came to Cape Breton about 1737, and then to Portsmouth, N. H. For a number of years after his marriage he resided at Greenland, but at the time that he and his wife signed the family deed in 771, he was a resident of Portsmouth."
