BiographyRaised by grandparents after death of mother when he was almost 5. After graduating from Harvard, he did his medical studies under Dr. Henry Sargent. He became a member of the Tremont Street Medical Class of Boston. He was house physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in his last year. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1855 and then went to study in Europe (London, Paris, Vienna, and Berlin). He first practiced in Boston, then moved to Worcester in 1858. He wrote an unpublished book on the history of printing.2

BiographyHe was the eldest son of the Rev. Stephen Palmer, a graduate of Harvard College in 1789, who had the miniistry of the East Parish in Needham for 29 years. His grandfather was the Rev. Joseph Palmer, born in Cambridge and who graduated from Harvard in 1747, minister at Norton from 1753 to 1791. He taught school at the Eliot School in Roxbury for 1 year and at the Latin School in Boston from 1822 to 1824.He visited Cuba multiple times, living there from 1829 to 1820, and in 1836. He bought the Daily Commerical Gazette, and was its editor from 1831 to 1839. He was editor of the Whig Republican in 1840 for 3 months, then editor of the Boston Transcript from Sept. 1840 to Aug. 1842. He was editor of the Boston Traveller in 1844 and commercial editor of the Boston Atlas from 1845 to 1849. He was appointed Inspector of the Custom House from 1849 to 1853. He was then the commerical editor of the Boston Daily Advertiser until 1869. He prepared the necrology of Harvard College from 1851 to 1869 and published it in the Christian Register in 1870 as well as in a separate 536 page book. He was a member of the Historical societies of NY, RI, PA, WI, MD, and MA. He was a resident member of NEHGS from 1852 until his death. He was its first historiographer from 1856 to 1861. He was on the board of directors from 1862 until his death.9
