William Adison Houghton. who re- tired as Professur oí Latin at Bowdoin Collate in 1907, died suddenly from apoplexy Monday night. Oct. 22. at the home of his son. William Morria Houghton, in Plain field, N. J. He had been intending within a day or so to resume his Journey South to St. Petersburg. Fla., where he had been spending his Winters.
Professor Houghton was born 65 years ago of an old New England fam- By. the son of Cyrus and Eliza Sawin Houghton, in Holliston, Mass. He was graduated from Phillips Academy. Andover, in 1869, and from Yale in 1873. At Tale he became a member of Scroll and Key, the senior society; of the Psi Upsilon and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities, and was editor of the Yale Literary Magasine and class orator. Subsequently he studied for a year at the University of Berlin, and received the degree of A. M. from Yale in 1887.
Immediately after leaving cúnese au 1873 Professor Houghton became principal of the preparatory department of Olivet College in Michigan, where he remained until 1875. During the following academic year he was tutor of Latin at Yale. On July 11, 1878. he married Miss Charlotte Johnson Morris of New Haven, and a few months later sailed for Japan.
As Professor of English literature in the Imperial University at Tokio Professor Houghton spent five years in the Orient, and when he finally decided to return to his own Country he was received in audience by the Emperor of Japan who personally thanked him for his services. Two years of European travel and study intervened, at the close of which Professor Houghton became associate professor of English literature, afterward of Latin at New York University.
He remained at New York University, living In the meantime at Montclair. N. J., until 1892. In the Fall of that year he became Winkley professor of the Latin language and literature at Bowdoin College, a chair which he held until his retirement in 1907. His residence in Brunswick, the seat of Bowdoin College, continued on until 1913.
In the course of his long academic life and after his retirement Professor Houghton became the author of a large number of miscellaneous poems and articles appearing in different journals and periodicals. He translated the Odes of Horace into English verse and gave public lectures on literary, historical and educational subjects, notably on Japan and Japanese art. of the latter of which Professor and Mrs. Houghton had formed an unusual collection, for many years exhibited in the Bowdoin Art Museum. He had been a member of the managing committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Rome since 1894 and belonged also to the American Philological Association and the Society of Colonial Wars.
His wife. a daughter. Miss Cecil Houghton of Boston. Mass., and two sons, William Morris Houghton, mentioned above, and Charles A. J. Houghton of West Medford. Mass.. survive him. His burial will take place Friday morning. Oct. 26, in the family plot in Holliston.
