After her marriage and until she became too old and feeble in health, she was known as the family doctor in her neighborhood. Martha was a helpmeet to her husband and a good mother to her children. She attended to the affairs in her household herself in preference to leaving them to others, claiming that "none of the domestics now procurable will do to trust to the extent that she would like and in the absence of proper training they are want­ing in the perservering and industrious habits essential to make them what they should be." 472
