Revolutionary War Officer, and founder of Leesville, VA., the first incorporated town in Virginia after the Civil War.329

1/1/1777 commissioned Captain, 1st Virginia Regiment.
1778 Capt/Pay Master, 1st VA State Regiment under Col. George Gibson.
4/4/1778 in Muster Roll in Valley Forge as Capt., 1st VA State Regiment.
5/1778 comm. Maj., Inf., 2nd VA State Reg. under Col. Gregory Smith.

Note that the book "Lee of Virginia" by Edmund Jennings Lee, MD, has a paragraph on page 542 concerning another Major John Lee. The records of the two Major John Lees are quite similar but there is one difference. The John Lee in the book "Lee of Virginia" was appointed Captain, 2nd State Regiment in 1777 while this John Lee was a Captain in the 1st VA State Regiment and was not assigned to the 2nd VA State Regiment until 1779.331
