1876 Edward Iddo Hanson started teaching school at the age of 18.
197 The schools were one-room buildings and were located approximately three miles apart in any direction which required the scholars in their leather boots with brass toes to walk anywhere up to 1 1/2 miles each way. He taught for 27 years and the salary was up to forty dollars per month when he quit teaching in 1903. The school term was twenty four weeks per year (six months). There was no teachers retirement or pension plan at that time.
He followed farming in the summer time and in 1892 traded his new house which he had built in Lewisville at a cost of $400 for a forty-acre farm owned by Schrodie Joe Denbow on the Lewisville-Jacobsburg road.
In 1895 he disposed of this farm and thereafter rented farms on the share and moved when necessary to be near the school where he was teaching as at that time teachers seldom taught more than one or two terms in the same school.
