| Note | I can find no evidence of a Marriage between Catherine Jane Snelson and George Lord Dalby. My guess is that the relationship probably took place between mid 1949 and mid 1950. |
| Biography | This is a complex set of circumstances so I hope I have the story correctly. Whereas the facts are on the public record, I could not have connected parts of the story I had gathered without the help of his son Christopher Edward Edge. As I understand it, George used several names throughout his life. His relationships are therfore not easy to follow, to document nor to publish as there are sensitive matters here. It is known that he changed his name by deed poll to Edward Harvey, however I was not aware of that until advised by Chris Edge, his son. I find that quite odd, as the Q4 1955 Marriage Register shows "Edge William G married Snelson or Harvey in The Wirral" I also understand that at various times he called himself Matt Marshall and Tramp Royal and was known as "Jon Jinnipen" in some circles. He was just over 6 feet tall, blue eyes and dark hair. In 1918 he described himself as an "artists and designer". With regard to military service, there are a few anomalies in the sequence of events but I have found that he was "enlisted" into the Army on 22 July 1916. He was "examined" on 3 June 1917 aged 25 years. Evidently, he wore glasses and had a squint in his left eye. From sometime in 1916 to 22 February 1917 he had been "a patient" in Liverpool Consumption Hospital. He was "called up" in May 1917 and 4 days later ended up in hospital. He was discharged (of good character) as being permanently unfit on 28 February 1918 - and I think that this was because he had TB - which explains why he had been in Liverpool Consumption Hospital - although his eyesight may also have been an issue. There is more information about George in the story of Catherine Jean Snelson [23549]. I have no information on the whether there were any other children or family with his wife Elizabeth Harvey or any other relationship. Secondly, I have no information now on why his middle name is "Lord". Lastly, I am unaware of any ongoing contact he may have had with Catherine and her family. Liverpool University has some of George Lord Dalby's letters related to others in the literary world. Evidemtly some of his published material appears in "The Gypsy Lore Society" books the Copyright of which is held by his son Chris being the only known descendant. |

| Census 1939 | George Lord D'Alby Id #21,915 (Principal) was at home on Census night 1939 at Low Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; Address: 2A Phythian Street Note : This is very strange indeed. The original entry in the register has been changed in manuscript - crossing out the original pair George D'Alby and Elizabeth G. D'Alby and replacing them with Edward Harvey and Elizabeth G. Harvey and/or Taylor. All the other data has been left untouched as for the originals. I now understand from Chris Edge that NR230 is a Government Circular about name changes. HNA is the directory identification for Liverpool. The date is when the name was actually changed. Somewhere in the past, I have a record of this George D'Alby marrying Catherine Snelson dau of Edward Snelson and Miss McMullen - but this has been lost in my archives (ha - shoeboxes), so I can provide no more information. I no longer have any confidence that they were ever actually married. Original Documents, Source and Citations here |
