| Biography | The police records state that he was born in 1823 and that he joined the force on 5 October 1857. He was stationed at Collector as the lockup keeper, and was shot at Kimberley's Hotel by the bushranger, John Dunn.
Samuel was alone in the town when the three bushrangers John Dunn, Ben Hall and John Gilbert attacked Kimberley's Inn at 5-45 pm on 26th January 1865. Samuel told his wife that he would just have to do his best and approached the Inn armed with a carbine and bayonet. Dunn, hiding behind a fencepost shot him in the chest and as he staggered shot him in the face. He died immediately ... all witnessed by one of his 9 children, Frederick Nelson, who was also fired upon by Dunn.
The three bushrangers robbed his body and escaped into the bush. |
