     Valera Catherine Vaubel was born on 6 Oct 1909 in Chatsworth, Illinois.9,10,11 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents, Rev. Edward George Vaubel and Catherine Angelia Glabe.5 She appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Bonfield, Kankakee Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents.16
     Valera graduated from the nursing school at Deaconess Hospital, in Freeport, Illinois, in 1930.6 She appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Ottawa, LaSalle Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents.17
     Valera appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of San Diego, San Diego Co., California, at U.S. Naval Hospital, enumerated 2 Apr 1940, where she was a nurse.18
     Valera married first John Alonzo Corbin on 15 Aug 1957 in Washington, Illinois.9,12
     Valera and John were divorced in 1958.4
     Valera married second Dante Elwyn Wiskerson on 17 Dec 1972 in San Diego, California.13
     She was a nurse in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps for 20 years, retiring at the rank of Lt. Commander.19,20 In the 1940 census she reported she had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and that she had worked 52 weeks the prior year, earning $840.18
     She was at Pearl Harbor in the attack on 7 Dec 1942, and was one of 29 Navy nurses awarded a citation for "outstanding ability in performance of duty under enemy fire" by Admiral Nimitz, commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific fleet in Feb 1943. The citation reads in part:
At the time of the attack and afterwards, this unit displayed conspicuous devotion in the line of duty. Its ability to cope with this disaster was responsible for the successful care of all casualties and the saving of many lives. The professional skill displayed and the distinguished service rendered by this hospital unit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the naval service.6
     Her husband died on 20 Aug 1994 in La Mesa, California.21
     Valera died on 8 Dec 2000 at age 91.14,15
