Grand Duke Ludwig I (of Hesse) was born on 14 June 1753 in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Prussia
.1 He was the son of Landgrave Ludwig IX (of Hesse-Darmstadt) and Princess Karoline (Henriette Christine) (of Birkenfeld).1 Grand Duke Ludwig I (of Hesse) was christened on 17 June 1753 in St. Nikolaikirche Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Prussia.1 He married Princess Luise Henriette Karoline (of Hesse-Darmstadt), daughter of Prince Georg Wilhelm (of Hesse-Darmstadt) and Princess Luise (Marie Albertine) (of Leiningen-Dagsburg), in 1777 at Prinz Georg Palais, Darmstadt, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt.1 Grand Duke Ludwig I (of Hesse) died on 6 April 1830 in Darmstadt, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, at age 76.1 He was buried on 10 April 1830 at Stadtkirche, Darmstadt, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt.1
