After their marriage he and his wife Della lived in Garden Valley, El Dorado Co., California, for a time, then in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, before moving to Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada, about October 1909.3 During this period Della worked as a waitress, and in Reno as a servant, while he remained "generally ... idle" with occasional odd jobs and a few days working at a gambling house.3
In November 1908 he was arrested and charged with grand larceny for stealing a watch and jewelry valued at $75 from Ernest Mulliken's boarding room at the Dunnigan Hotel in Dunnigan, Yolo Co., California. He had traveled to Dunnigan from his home in Sacramento on 2 November to visit Della, who was working at the hotel as a waitress, and returned home two days later. A few days later Mulliken found that his trunk had been broken into, and that the watch and jewelry were missing. John became the prime suspect, since he was the only stranger staying on the same floor at the hotel, and he had asked the wife of C. W. Robinson, the hotel manager, to borrow a hammer.
Mulliken and the police kept a watch on Della, hoping she would lead them to him. Before long Della showed Robinson a message saying her mother was ill in Sacramento, and asked for time off to see her. Mulliken followed her to Sacramento, where she took another train to Stockton and went to a boarding house. Mulliken kept watch for 2-3 days without seeing John, then returned to Dunnigan.
Robinson, the hotel manager, was then formally deputized, went to the boarding house in Stockton, and knocked on the door where Della was staying. John answered and was arrested. He was brought back to Dunnigan where he was arraigned and pleaded not guilty. Unable to pay his $1000 bond, he was sent to jail.2,4,5
In May 1910 Della filed a complaint with the police that John had beaten her. He was arrested and jailed, but she later recanted, and testified unwillingly. The case was dismissed on 1 June after the judge made him promise to treat her better in the future.6,7
On 20 August 1910 he was arrested in Auburn, Placer Co., California, for stealing three diamond rings valued at $700 from the wife of George A. Campbell, manager of the Reno Power, Water, and Light Co. Della, who had been working for the Campbells as a servant for three months, was also arrested, perhaps a few days later, and "held technically for investigation."
Mrs. Campbell reportedly had left the rings on her dresser the afternoon of 14 August, and several hours later discovered that they were missing. Suspicion fell on John, who had visited Della there that afternoon and disappeared the next morning. Police learned that Della had recently been writing to a J. H. Hart in Grass Valley and in Colfax. When John went to the post office in Colfax asking for any mail sent to J. H. Hart, he was arrested. One of the diamonds, worth $350, was found in his possession, and had recently been remounted in a cheap setting. Della was questioned by the police but denied knowing John's whereabouts, said she was surprised by his arrest, and was convinced that he was innocent.3,8,9
About a month later however, on 20 September 1910, both John and Della pleaded guilty, much to the surprise of court officials and onlookers.10 John took the blame for the robbery, and on 22 September 1910 was sentenced to five years at the state prison in Carson City, Nevada, while Della was released, reportedly "in a delicate condition."11
The end of his marriage to Della did not mark the end of his criminal career. On 10 May 1915 he began serving a three-year term at Folsom State Prison in Folsom, Sacramento Co., California, for a second-degree burglary in San Francisco Co.12 And on 1 September 1922 he was arrested in Sacramento for a robbery at a Japanese rooming house. A newspaper article about the arrest describes him as a "habitual criminal with a long police record in California," says he was suspected in several other robberies, and had served prison terms at San Quentin and Folsom Prisons in California, and in Carson City, Nevada.13

No online record has been found for Oscar's marriage to Della Moore, but both of her parents' obituaries name her as Mrs. Della Carlson, and they were listed as husband and wife in the 1920 and 1930 censuses, living with Della's parents in 1920 and Della's father in 1930. When Oscar registered for the World War I draft in November 1917 he stated he was single with no dependents, so they must have married between then and 19 January 1920 when they were enumerated together in the census.10,11,1,12,5
In 1920 he and Della were living with her parents in Georgetown Twp., El Dorado Co., California,1 and probably moved with them to Fair Oaks, Sacramento Co., California, about 1925 (her mother's 1929 obituary says "a few years ago").11 He and Della are listed there in the 1930 census, in the same house as Della's father John and her brother Alymer and his wife Drucilla, but as a separate household.12 In 1935 they were living in Roseville, Placer Co., California,13 and by 1940 were back in El Dorado Co., in Greenwood Twp.13
He was listed as an electric shovel operator in the 1930 census, but worked as a boiler maker most of his life.12,5,1,13,6

He and his wife Willa met in Placerville, El Dorado Co., California, in 1910, when his baseball team stayed at the hotel there where she was working. After their marriage they lived for a time in Los Angeles, then in Arizona, then in Sacramento.8
He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War I, was wounded in 1919 ("degree undetermined"), and may have been reported as missing in action.9,8
After his divorce he lived with his widowed mother in Solano Co., California, where they are listed in Benicia in the 1920 census10, and in Fairfield in the 1930 and 1940 censuses.11,12 He apparently never remarried; he was listed as single in the 1920 census, and divorced in 1930 and 1940.10,11,12
He listed his occupation as a vulcanizer for the Old Eureka Mining Co. in Sutter Creek, Amador Co., California, when he registered for the World War I draft in 1917. After the war he worked as a laborer and plumber.3,10,11,12
