Sylvester Sweet was born circa 1823 in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.1,2,3

Sylvester Sweet married Melissa Wood on 8 December 1850 in Petersburg, Rensselaer County, New York.1,2 He died on 10 March 1893 in Bruning, Thayer County, Nebraska, at age ~70. He was apparently on a visit there when he died.2,3 He was buried in Waucoma Cemetery, Waucoma, Fayette County, Iowa.2,3


Sylvester Sweet and Melissa Sweet appeared on the census of 1860 in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois, which lists Sylvester Sweet, 38, born in Massachusetts; his wife Melissa Sweet, 29, born in Massachusetts; and their children Marsalus [sic, Marcellus], 10, born in New York; George A., 7, born in New York; Agnes M., 4, born in Illinois; and Ama [sic] A., 1, born in Illinois.1 He was a farmer in 1860.4

He was in the Civil War in 1862. He enlisted 14 August 1862, in the 74th Illinois S. V., Company A; was in battles of Stone River, Perryville, Murfreesborg and smaller skirmishes, serving three years and honorably discharged July, 1865.
He contracted a variety of diseases that eventually disabled him.

Sylvester Sweet and Melissa Sweet appeared on the census of 1870 in Eden, Fayette County, Iowa, which lists Sylvester Sweet, 47, born in Massachusetts; his wife Milissa [sic], 39, brn in Massacusetts; and their children Marcellus, 18 [mis-indexed as 8], born in New York; G. [George] A., 16, born in New York; A.G. [Agnes M.], 13, born in Illinois; A.M. [Anna or Ama], 10, born in Illinois' Flora, 4, born in Iowa; and Willis, 1, born in Iowa; a farm laborer and a school teacher.5 He was a farmer in 1870.5

Biography

Melissa Wood was born circa 1831 in Massachusetts. Washington Deaths, 1891-1907 (Source 839) gives her birthplace as New York, but that is probably wrong.1

Melissa Wood married Sylvester Sweet on 8 December 1850 in Petersburg, Rensselaer County, New York.1,2 She died of pneumonia on 5 December 1899 in Edmonds, Snohomish County, Washington, at age ~68. She apparently died at the home of a daughter and her son-in-law George Barnett. However, I have not been able to find that Barnett family in the State of Washington in the 1900 census. One of her sons, George A. Sweet, lived in Edmonds, Washington, so perhaps one of her daughters also lived there.2,3
