Mary Kathryn Fiebig Houghton

Mary Kay Houghton, 87, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2007, in Reno, Nev.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1919 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mary Kay was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she graduated from high school and attended Coe College. She was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. In 1943 while attending Coe College she met her husband of 58 years, Naval Lt. Bud Houghton, who preceded her in death in 2001. Together they had two sons, Mike of Reno, Nev. and Bruce, who died in 1966 at the young age of 19. Mary Kay was both a very creative and a very competitive person. She taught elementary school in Akron, Ohio until she found golf. Her passion for golf combined with her competitive nature led her to 10 Women's Club Championships at Shady Hollow Country Club in Massillon, Ohio and several Akron District Titles in Ohio. She also held the family championship title on the course, which frustrated her husband, irritated her two sons and delighted her friends and family. She was skilled at many crafts or anything that involved using her hands. Her unique hand made dollhouses that were something to behold and cherish.

She is survived by her son, Michael J. Houghton Reno, Nev; three grandchildren, Michael W. Houghton of Arlington Heights, Ill; Molly Houghton Johnson of Wilmington, N.C; and Katie Houghton Lee Huntington of Beach, Calif; and four great- grandchildren, Michael J. Houghton II, Lindsay Houghton, Karissa Johnson and Kennedy Johnson. She is also survived by her loving sister, Genie Fiebig Miller of Palm Desert, Calif; and the Miller family, Frank R. and Mary Kay's niece, Karen and nephews, Matthew and Andrew. She will be missed and remembered by the whole family.

The family will celebrate Mary Kay's life privately. The family requests that in lieu of flowers tributes may be made in her name to The Reno Air Racing Foundation, Gene Cernan Scholarship Fund, 14501 Mt. Anderson St., Reno, NV 89506.
